Sydney Metro Martin Place Station: Shaping a City’s Future
Though it’s not residential, this project holds a significant place in our portfolio and showcases the principles we bring to every pb + project. As Design Director for this transformative development over five years, I led the design of Sydney Metro Martin Place Station, encompassing an entire city block bounded by Hunter, Elizabeth, Martin Place, and Castlereagh Streets. This landmark project includes a new metro station, vibrant retail spaces, pedestrian pathways, and two commercial towers, creating a world-class transport, commercial, and lifestyle precinct in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.
The scale and complexity were immense, yet the principles that guided us remain at the core of residential design as well: pushing boundaries, demanding high performance, expressing identity, and creating a sense of joy. While the site was “big, complex, and expensive,” the challenges were, in essence, no different from those in residential projects. The key is approaching each question with a commitment to innovation and a deep respect for the human experience.
This project is a lasting source of pride for the entire team, and the lessons learned are directly transferrable to residential architecture. The exacting standards and demands we navigated have given pb + a unique foundation of insight, allowing us to deliver high-performance, innovative, and deeply personal homes with the same level of dedication.
